James F. Woodward

I am a Distinguished Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh and former president of the Philosophy of Science Association (2010–12). Much of my research concerns causation and scientific explanation. In addition I have worked on philosophical issues in psychology, neuroscience, and the social sciences. Before coming to Pittsburgh in the fall of 2010, I taught for many years at the California Institute of Technology, where I was J.O. and Juliette Koepfli Professor of Humanities.
